Step 2

Using the notes you took from The History of Rock and Roll: 'The '70s: Have a Happy Decade," add a defining characteristic of the decade to this wiki. To do so, click on this link: Defining Characteristics of the '70s.

Step 3

Select a performer such as David Bowie, Kiss, or Elton John, or select another '70s artist that would meet the criteria that follows. Individually (on your own) research background and biographical information about the artist, locating pictures, and providing lyrics and a tape or CD of a representative song. Present a summary of their research to the class on Monday, 11/16. The artist must be a '70s artist or an artist whose career took place (at least partially) during the '70s.

Your presentation should center on:
  1. the biographical information about the artist
  2. the persona or image the performer projects
  3. the stance taken within the music and lyrics
  4. whether background knowledge enhances appreciation and understanding of the work

  1. Identify and analyze the key features that distinguish the persona of the artist/writer from the “private” person.
  2. Select an important aspect of the artist/writer’s persona and discuss how it manifests itself within a specific work.
  3. Write a persuasive essay making a case for or against the theory that the more a reader knows about the artist/writer, the better one will be able to appreciate the work.
The class will meet in the FHS library Tuesday - 11/17, Thursday - 11/19, and Friday - 11/20. The assignment is due at the end of the period Friday.
